چکیده

Uniqueness in the linearised water-wave problem is considered for a fluid layer of constant depth containing two, three or four vertical barriers. The barriers are parallel, of infinite length in a horizontal direction, and may be surface-piercing and/or bottom mounted and may have gaps. The case of oblique wave incidence is included in the theory. A solution for a particular geometry is unique if there are no trapped modes, that is no free oscillations of finite energy. Thus, uniqueness is established by showing that an appropriate homogeneous problem has only the trivial solution. Under the assumption that at least one barrier does not occupy the entire fluid depth, the following results have been proven: for any configuration of two barriers the homogeneous problem has only the trivial solution for any frequency within the continuous spectrum; for an arbitrary configuration of three barriers the homogeneous problem has only the trivial solution for certain ranges of frequency within the continuous spectrum; for threebarrier configurations symmetric about a vertical line, it is shown that there are no correspondingly symmetric trapped modes for any frequency within the continuous spectrum; for four-barrier configurations symmetric about a vertical line, the homogeneous problem has only the trivial solution for certain ranges of frequency within the continuous spectrum. The symmetric four-barrier problem is investigated numerically and strong evidence is presented for the existence of trapped modes in both finite and infinite depth. The trapped mode frequencies are found for particular geometries that are in agreement with the uniqueness results listed above.

On uniqueness in the problem of gravity-capillary water waves above submerged bodies

In this paper we consider the two-dimensional linear problem of wave–body interaction with surface tension effects being taken into account. We suggest a criterion for unique solvability of the problem based on symmetrization of boundary integral equations. The criterion allows us to develop an algorithm for detecting non-uniqueness (finding trapped modes) for given geometries of bodies; exampl...

Motion trapping structures in the three-dimensional water-wave problem

Trapped modes in the linearized water-wave problem are free oscillations of finite energy in an unbounded fluid with a free surface. It has been known for some time that such modes are supported by certain structures when held fixed, but recently it has been demonstrated that in two dimensions trapped modes are also possible for freely-floating structures that are able to respond to the hydrody...

Non -propagating Waves and Behavior of Curtainwall-pile Breakwaters

Abstract Usually, evanescent modes or non-propagating waves are produced when a propagating incident wave impinges on an interface between two media or materials such as curtainwall-pile breakwater (CPB) at a subcritical angle and decay with distance from interface. To achieve an effective prediction of hydrodynamic performance of CPB and overcome the problem of underestimation of energy loss, ...

Trapped modes in the water-wave problem for a freely-floating structure

Trapped modes in the linearized water-wave problem are free oscillations of an unbounded fluid with a free surface that have finite energy; it has been known for some time that such modes are supported by certain structures when held fixed. This paper investigates the problem of a freelyfloating structure that is able to move in response to the hydrodynamic forces acting upon it and it is shown...

Water-wave propagation through an infinite array of cylindrical structures

An investigation is made into water-wave propagation through a doubly-periodic array of vertical cylinders extending to infinity in both horizontal directions. Methods are presented for the calculation of the frequency ranges for which wave propagation without change of amplitude is possible (‘passing bands’), and for which propagation without change of amplitude is not possible (‘stopping band...
